LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – George Strait is headlining at Jones AT&T Stadium for two performances this weekend, and Texas Tech is preparing for the crowds.
The two nearly sold-out “Strait to Texas Tech” concerts will take place Friday and Saturday. The Texas Tech Police Department and the athletics department said they are working to ensure safety for attendees.
“This is a chance for us to have maybe the most iconic name ever in country music come and play the venue and we’re excited about that,” said Robert Giovannetti the Senior Associate Director for External Operations with Texas Tech Athletics.
Security and parking changes
Parking will be limited starting at noon Friday. Giovannetti said attendees cannot enter controlled lots without a parking pass.
The two departments are also using a new weapons detection system at all gates. Giovannetti explains the Evolve system was first used during this past football season. It will identify weapons or weapon-shaped objects in a person’s pockets and pull them aside for another security check.
“That’s why we ask people, we don’t expect to slow people down, but give yourself plenty of time to get here and get yourself situated,” Giovannetti said.
Law enforcement presence will be increased on and around the Texas Tech campus.
Caitlynn Jeffries, the Public Information Officer for the Texas Tech Police Department, said the event will be treated like a football game.
“We will be working with local law enforcement agencies as well as Lubbock Fire Rescue and EMS,” Jeffries said. “We will be fully staffed and operational to be able to take on the large crowd.”
Giovannetti said attendees should download their tickets and have them ready before arriving. For more parking information, concert goers are encouraged to use the ‘Strait to Texas Tech’ website.
