A beloved Asian restaurant that has been a part of the University of Texas at Austin community for more than two decades is closing its doors next month. CoCo’s Cafe, Austin’s first bubble tea shop, announced on social media that it will be shuttering its location at 1910 Guadalupe Street after nearly 26 years in business.
The colorful spot, known for its boba drinks and Taiwanese food, said its last day of operation will be Sunday, May 10. However, the restaurant confirmed its second location on Research Boulevard will remain open.
“This location has meant so much to my family and me,” said CoCo’s Cafe owner Joyce Yang in an Instagram post. ” Rooted in our Taiwanese heritage, this space has become a place where culture, food and connection blossomed.”
CoCo’s is located on the Drag, a stretch of restaurants and shops along Guadalupe Street directly across from UT Austin. The small cafe opened in 2000 and has stood out on the strip for its black-painted walls, featuring a mural of a yellow dog and coyotes, with touches of hot pink.
As a former UT alum, Yang explained that opening CoCo’s allowed her to give back to her community that shaped her and serve generations of students and their families. Yang invited CoCo’s customers to share their favorite photos, memories and messages at the restaurant via their Dropbox page online.
“Guadalupe Street has truly been home, and we are so endlessly grateful for the love and support you’ve shown us,” Yang said. “While we’re saying goodbye to our Guadalupe location, Coco’s Cafe will continue serving the community at our Research location.”
To celebrate its final chapter, CoCo’s will be have a special buy one drink, get another for 50% deal on April 24 and 25, according to the cafe’s Instagram.
