The victim says a years-old dispute turned violent, leaving him shot in the leg as police quickly identified and arrested a suspect.
CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — A man is speaking out after a shooting Monday night that left him hurt, and police said it led to an arrest.
According to the Corpus Christi Police Department, officers were called around 7:35 p.m. to the 1100 block of 15th Street for a shooting. When they arrived, they found the victim, Matthew Rosas, with a gunshot wound.
He was taken to a hospital and is expected to be okay.
Police say they identified the suspect as Nathaniel Paiyou. He was later found on North Shoreline Boulevard, taken into custody without incident, and charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.
Rosas said the shooting is tied to a problem that started years ago in high school. “Beef from high school about four years ago… I guess he held a grudge,” Rosas said.
Rosas said he was shot in the leg and the bullet is still there. “It’s still in there… the hospital didn’t want to take it out,” he said. Rosas said he knew right away he had been shot.
“I knew immediately… it felt like a burning sensation. It’s just a flesh wound,” he said.
Rosas said he went to meet someone but ended up running into the suspect instead. “I thought I was meeting a friend… but it wasn’t. He drove up and started shooting,” Rosas said.
He said he hid behind a car while shots were fired before the suspect drove away. Rosas also reported damage to the vehicle, saying it had been hit more than once.
“It looks like the vehicle got hit two times… a big hole here and another on the inside,” he said. He added that the car is not his. “The crazy part is it’s not even my car,” Rosas said. Even after everything, he said he is thankful.
“I’m good… I’m thankful,” he said. Police say the case is still under investigation.
