H-E-B will celebrate Earth Day on April 22 by handing out 276,000 reusable bags at stores across Texas, according to a company press release.
Starting at 8 a.m., customers at any H-E-B, Central Market, Joe V’s Smart Shop, or Mi Tienda location in Texas can pick up a free Earth Day bag while supplies last. Since 2008, H-E-B has given away more than 3.4 million reusable bags as part of its annual Earth Day effort.
This year’s design features Garner State Park along the Frio River. H-E-B said the bag marks the third and final release in a three-year series spotlighting Texas state parks. Customers can also buy additional bags for $1.50 each. The company said the bags are made mostly from ocean-bound plastic, or plastic waste recovered from areas where it faced a high risk of entering the ocean.
The giveaway ties into H-E-B’s “Our Texas, Our Future” initiative, which focuses on sustainability efforts tied to Texas land, water, and air.
H-E-B is also pushing several cleanup and recycling efforts during Earth Month. This year, the retailer awarded Recycling for Texans grants to Carrizo Springs, Columbus, Del Rio, and Eagle Pass to support recycling centers, outreach, education, and equipment. Since 2021, H-E-B has provided nearly $1 million in recycling grants to 15 communities, the company said.
The retailer also said 816 schools joined this year’s School Plastic Bag Recycling Challenge and collected more than 8.4 million plastic bags. That total beat the previous record of 6.7 million bags set in 2025. Early Childhood Center in Eagle Pass set a school record by collecting more than 1.4 million bags.
Customers can also support H-E-B’s environmental efforts through a donation campaign running through May 5. The campaign benefits H-E-B Trees for Texans, a partnership with Texan by Nature that helps plant native trees at schools and in communities across the state.
Based in San Antonio, H-E-B operates more than 455 stores in Texas and Mexico and employs more than 170,000 people.
