EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — El Paso Water, along with the El Paso Police Department, is warning residents of lane closures in West El Paso that may affect their commutes due to the potential risk of a dam breach at Cement Lake.

As KTSM 9 News reported, EP Water crews are working to reduce pressure on the dam to prevent overflow from impacting the nearby roadways. As the work continues, they are closing parts of Paisano, Doniphan and Loop 375 out of an abundance of caution.

EPPD said they are assisting with lane closures, which include the following roadways:

Loop 375 eastbound at Race Track exit

Loop 375 eastbound at Paisano

Loop 375 westbound at Doniphan

West and eastbound lanes of Doniphan at Race Track

According to a spokesperson with the EPPD, they anticipate the closures to last 24 to 48 hours. EP Water said the closures will remain in place until technical advances are complete or mitigation efforts sufficiently reduce the risk.

The utility company said they have retained Freese and Nichols Engineering to conduct advance modeling to better understand the potential risks and timing associated with a full breach scenario.
