LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – Earth Day is more than a reminder on the calendar. It’s a call to action, bringing neighbors together from across the Hub City to keep the place they call home beautiful.
For volunteer Linken Sanchez, it all starts with you.
“You want to be able to be proud of your town, you want to be able to say yeah I live in Lubbock Texas and be happy about it and be like, look how beautiful it is here,” Sanchez said.
Volunteers find layers of buried trash
The volunteers came ready to clean up. But Isabella Perez said she was surprised by just how much trash they found.
“So much, like there’s trash buried under trash under trash, like there is so much of it, close to the water, like we couldn’t get most of the trash there because it’s buried under the sand and under rocks,” Perez said.
Bellisima Bilbrey said small actions make the biggest differences, and it takes everyone to keep the city clean and beautiful.
“Well at the park there are trash cans already here, so we can at least do that, and definitely just pick up after other people, a lot of people think oh its not my trash, lets not pick it up, but I think it’s good to just pick up others peoples trash and bite it,” Bilbrey said. “There’s so many nasty things very where, especially by the lakeside, if you are just sitting there fishing, you might as well pick something up.”
Importance of giving back
Tiffani Vasquez said one of the best parts of giving back is the sense of pride and purpose that comes with it.
“Get out there do something, connect with one of these amazing non-profits, or just get out on your own, you don’t even have to use a non-profit, just go and do your own park clean up, your own give back, your own volunteering,” Vasquez said. “It feels good like that’s the best thing, you feel great when you come out, today is a beautiful day, we are getting outside, and we are doing something good for the community, so get involved.”
