EL PASO, TEXAS (KFOX14/CBS4) — El Paso Mayor Renard Johnson returned to his alma mater, Andress High School, on Thursday to support the school’s boys basketball team with a $1,500 donation.

The money is intended to help cover travel, hotel stays, and other team expenses.

Johnson, who graduated from Andress High School in 1984, said the donation was personal because the school is home to him and his family.

“Oh, you know, I’m a little biased to Andress, because this is where my brothers and sisters, we all went to school here, so I spent many, many years in this building, in this gym, on this campus, and what better way to give back than to my own school?” Johnson said.

Beyond athletics, Johnson also encouraged students to focus on academics, urging them to prioritize their education as a foundation, the same way he did when he attended the school.
