A Plano Senior High School student is getting plenty of applause after a prom invitation he staged caught the attention of millions online.

Blaine Ahnemann asked his girlfriend, Ori Krakowski, to prom with a surprise performance in “royal fashion” – complete with a script, trumpet players, and their friends.

Video of the “promposal” has gone viral on Instagram, racking up more than 4 million views and thousands of comments in just a few days. Watch below:

“I just posted it to have it out there, have a couple of friends see it, but then it started, the views started going up, and it started getting more views,” Ahnemann said.

The couple, both seniors and longtime members of the school’s band program, have known each other since freshman year and their connection through music. Ahnemann plays trombone, and Krakowski plays the trumpet.

Ahnemann said the idea had been sitting in the back of his mind for more than a year.

“So it all started back when I was a junior,” Ahnemann told NBC 5. “Last year, after I did a homecoming proposal to her, I saw a reel about exactly what I did, and I was like, ‘No way, I’m saving this for later.’”

When prom season finally arrived, he decided it was time to act. With help from friends, many of them fellow band members, Ahnemann pulled together a theatrical surprise outside Krakowski’s home.

Trumpeters played an introduction in the middle of her street, followed by a herd of “horses” and the sound of hooves using coconuts. A decree was read aloud, starting with “here ye, here ye” – a creative endeavor that Ahnemann says just came from the heart.

“I got together with some friends, got some trumpet players I know, and just kind of put everything together,” he said. “Had somebody write a script, bought some coconuts off of Amazon, and then showed up to her house one day and did it.”

Krakowski said she suspected something might be happening when Ahnemann told her he was picking her up for dinner on an unusual night.

“He told me, I’m going to pick you up for dinner at 6:30 on a random Monday,” she said. “So I was like, OK… maybe something’s up.”

What she didn’t expect was seeing musicians from her own trumpet section performing in the middle of the street.

“I was in shock,” Krakowski said. “All those guys are also my close friends. We’re all in the same friend group, so it was super cool that they helped Blaine set it all up. The script was written beautifully. Everyone was in character, and everything just went super, super well.”

Ahnemann said the over-the-top approach was intentional.

“If the girl you’re prom-posing to isn’t almost blushing from embarrassment because of how cheesy it is, then you’re not doing it right,” he said.

While both say they’re stunned by how widely the video has spread, their focus has quickly shifted to preparing for the prom on Saturday.

Despite the viral fame, the couple says the plans are actually simple for this weekend. They’re planning photos, dinner, and the dance with friends – and one last memory before graduating at the end of next month.
