AUSTIN (KXAN) — Peak wildflower season in Texas may be over, but residents in the Lone Star State can still find remaining blooms using a new map from the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT).
The department recently launched the Blooms Across Texas layer on its Statewide Planning Map, which highlights locations across Texas with blooms of Bluebonnets, Indian Paintbrushes, Prairie Verbenas and Indian Blankets.
TxDOT said the map also features details on 12 wildflower festivals that are held throughout the state.

According to the department, it invests between $50,000 and $60,000 every year to spread nearly 30,000 pounds of wildflower seeds along Texas roadsides.
“These wildflowers do more than add beauty: they help reduce erosion, support pollinators like bees and butterflies and boost tourism in local communities,” TxDOT said.

According to TxDOT, the newly-added wildflower layer was part of an initiative planned through 2026 to commemorate the Statewide Planning Map’s 20th anniversary. Other additions included a barbecue-themed layer and a seasonal Thanksgiving map, with more layers in the works.
“The addition of the wildflower layer reflects a broader goal: making transportation data not only useful, but engaging — offering Texans new ways to experience the roads that connect them,” TxDOT said.
