EL PASO, Texas (KFOX14/CBS4) — A tense encounter between El Paso police officers and an individual was seen on a viral video inside a retail shop, showing officers restraining and removing the person from the premises.

According to Fitfam, the incident happened on Wednesday at a clothing shop on Yandell Drive.

Officials identified the woman as Regina Viramontes.

The footage recorded begins with officers attempting to control Viramontes.

The situation quickly escalates as at least two officers physically restrain her against a counter before bringing her to the ground.

In the video, Viramontes can be seen struggling while officers attempt to secure her arms.

The officers eventually bring her to a kneeling position on the floor as they continue efforts to detain her.

The situation then moves outside the store, where additional officers are present.

It appears Viramontes spat at the officer, and that’s when the officer punched the woman.

Police vehicles can be seen parked nearby.

Officers continue to hold Viramontes as they escort her out. During a moment outside, a female officer is seen punching the woman in the face, the video shows.

You hear the female officer say, “No ma’am, no ma’am. You do not do that.” It’s unclear what caused the officer to punch Viramontes.

It is not immediately clear what led to the confrontation.

After the video was made public, on Friday morning, the El Paso Police Police Department issued the following statement:
