Popular Houston bar Dean’s Downtown will close Sunday after 13 years to make way for a new bar concept.

Bobby Stark, one of those who leased the space and opened Dean’s in 2013, said the bar at 316 Main will close Sunday. The property is owned by Jim Pirtle and Melissa Bosch, and Pirtle’s children will open the new bar before the FIFA World cup.

Stark said it was a mutual decision to close, with just two years left on its current lease. He said Dean’s was bought out of the contract even though he had planned to close at the end of the lease anyway.

Stark said he has had mixed emotions since announcing the bar would close.

“Dean’s has become part of the community,” Stark said. “It’s almost like it’s not your work, not your home, but it’s another place. It’s always been like that, and we kind of wanted that since day one.”

Since opening in 2013, the bar has become known as a Houston nightlife hotspot. From first dates to birthday parties, Stark said he has seen customers share memories of their time there, and he said that was only possible because of the staff.

“Without a doubt, it’s the employees,” Stark said. “None of those people would’ve felt comfortable if the employees didn’t make them feel comfortable as well.”

On its last day, Dean’s will host a throwback party from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m. featuring early- and mid-2010s music.

Stark said Dean’s will bring back the bar’s 2013 prices during the party. Customers will be able to get drinks for $5 to $7 during that time.

The new bar will keep the same name but will feature a remodel. The owner did not provide further details but said it is expected to open April 29.
