LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – Big Brothers Big Sisters of Lubbock creates one-on-one mentoring relationships that reshape futures, strengthen communities and drive economic progress across the South Plains.
Daniel Ortega is a board member for the organization and is now a Big Brother himself, a decision he said has made a big impact on his life.
“And it’s really rewarding. You get to see different life, different people and different stages in their life,” Ortega said. “He obviously makes me want to be a better person.”
The organization connects children with adults who support growth, education and long-term success.
Witnessing his “Little” grow and improve his education during their time together has been the most rewarding aspect, Ortega said.
“There’s been a lot of firsts for us, so being able to take him to do things that maybe he hasn’t experienced before,” Ortega said. “And seeing his confidence.”
For Ortega, mentoring sparked his desire to give back to the Lubbock community.
“It’s one of those things where once you get out into the community, you see how much a need there is, especially right now,” Ortega said. “There’s a lot of families that could use a lot of help, and so it’s just made me want to do this more.”
For those considering volunteering, Ortega said it’s worth it.
“It doesn’t take a whole lot for you to have a big impact in the community and in these kids’ lives, so if you’re thinking about it, I would highly recommend it,” Ortega said.
During National Volunteer Month, Ortega shows community service can inspire current and future generations to lead and support others.
