EL PASO, Texas (KFOX14/CBS4) — Get this, turns out El Paso is one of comedian and content creator Leo Gonzalez’s most important cities.

On Friday, ahead of his weekend shows at Bart Reed’s Comic Strip Nightclub, Gonzalez sat with KFOX14/CBS4 to reveal that El Paso is among the top five cities that are engaging with his content.

Gonzalez, who has been creating content on social media for six years, said that according to metrics and analytics, “For like four or five years, El Paso has consistently been like number four on my top five cities in the country.”

So, what does that mean?

Gonzalez explained that El Pasoans relate to him and feel familiar with him.

“As I walked around here today and yesterday, people tell me the same thing: it feels like they know me, that we know each other,” Gonzalez said.

Gonzalez will perform two shows both nights, adding that at this point in his tour, El Paso will play a vital role in his future and success as a comedian (in a way).

“These are the last four shows on the tour, before I do my ‘Netflix is a Joke’ show in like two weeks. And so whatever doesn’t work here won’t work anywhere,” Gonzalez said in between laughs.

So, what can people expect from his show?

Well, Gonzalez said his show is different than his social media “skits.”

“When you come to the show, you meet the person behind them, you know?” Gonzalez said, adding that he doesn’t do the same thing he does on TikTok but live on stage. “I’m telling you about what my life has been like since I started doing content and since I started doing this stand-up stuff too.”

When speaking about his personal journey, Gonzalez reflected on how he went from homeless to a content creator with millions of followers.

“It feels, I mean, surreal,” Gonzalez said, adding that he tries to stay present in the moment and appreciates the effort fans make to attend shows. “I don’t take it for granted. I don’t take it as a light thing.”

Now, you know as a news station, we had to ask about his reporter skits.

Gonzalez said that he worked in the news industry and joked about applying to KFOX14/CBS4 but not getting the job.

But then, in a serious turn, Gonzalez highlighted the importance of local news organizations these days.

“Local news is, I think, the most important,” Gonzalez said. “I think, you know, that’s, those are the people that are on the ground.”

Without naming names or pointing fingers, Gonzalez said that when people “try to minimize news,” it probably means “they have things to hide.”

Finally, Gonzalez left us with a message to all his El Paso fans.

“I just want to say that I’m so appreciative of El Paso for the support over these few years,” Gonzalez said. “Please come to the show. Let’s have fun. Let’s be sober. You know, or whatever.”

Fun fact

This is not Gonzalez’s first rodeo in El Paso. The L.A. comedian said he had been to El Paso five years ago just for fun, adding that he partied in “Cincinnasty.”
