The son of disgraced former Bexar County Constable Michelle Barrientes Vela is expected to start trial next week after being accused of interfering with EMS and attacking police.

Michael Barrientes Vela, 23, was charged with assault of a peace officer in April 2024, along with his other two brothers, Anthony Librado Barrientes Vela, 27; and Carlos Barrientes Vela, 31.

Each is accused of interfering with EMS and attacking police officers as they were assisting an unresponsive woman April 29, 2024.

Their mother is former Bexar County Constable Michelle Barrientes Vela, who previously was charged with two counts of evidence tampering on allegations that she altered cash records of her office’s handling of park fees.

Although she was convicted, the Eighth Court of Appeals in El Paso reversed her conviction and acquitted her of all charges.

The incident involving her sons happened in the 1200 block of Bandera Road as authorities were responding to a report of an unresponsive woman.

A police report states that EMS reported that they were in trouble and called San Antonio police to the scene. They found Michael Barrientes Vela interfering with EMS as they were assisting the unidentified woman.

When officers attempted to have Michael Barrientes Vela back away, his brothers interfered. All three men attacked the officers, a police report states.

The officers sustained minor injuries. One officer had a dislocated shoulder and was taken to an area hospital for treatment. All three men were arrested at the scene.

Michael Barrientes Vela is scheduled for a jury trial Monday. Court records show that he has applied for probation.

Assault of a peace officer is a second-degree felony punishable by two to 20 years in prison and a fine of up to $10,000.
