Spurs vs. Trail Blazers Game 4: San Antonio rallies to take command; follow for more updates

For a second straight game, San Antonio has erased a major deficit to take control down the stretch, building a 96-81 advantage to force a timeout with 5:24 to play.

The Spurs have outscored the Blazers 22-7 in the fourth quarter, taking control after Portland led by as many as 19 points.

San Antonio flipped the switch in a similar way during Friday’s Game 3, trailing by 15 without about five minutes to play in the third quarter befor leading by as many as 15 points late in a 120-108 win.

San Antonio trailed by as many as 19 points but has outscored Portland 43-19 since halftime, taking their largest lead at 84-77 and forcing a Blazers timeout with 8:16 to play.

Stephon Castle and Victor Wembanyama connected for a pair of lobs and a third dunk on a baseline out-of-bounds play, and De’Aaron Fox followed with back-to-back baskets.

Wembanyama and Fox both have 21 points to lead San Antonio.

After a quiet opening half, Devin Vassell had nine points, four rebounds, an assist, a steal and a block in the third quarter, helping San Antonio pull into a 74-74 tie entering the final period.

Vassell has 11 points for the game, giving the Spurs four players in double-figure scoring along with De’Aaron Fox (17), Victor Wembanyama (15) and Stephon Castle (13).

Returning after missing Game 3 due to a concussion, Wembanyama has nine rebounds, six blocks, three assists and two steals.

The energy flipped fast at The Rock at La Cantera to open the third quarter.

After a quiet end to the first half, a strong run by the San Antonio Spurs reignited the crowd, with the Spurs Jackals leading loud “Defense” and “Go Spurs Go” chants as momentum shifted.

Fans jumped to their feet as the Spurs chipped away at the deficit, building energy with each stop and score against the Portland Trail Blazers.

By the time San Antonio tied the game at the end of the third quarter, the watch party erupted in cheers, with hands in the air and flags waving across the venue.

A booming “Go Spurs Go” chant carried into the fourth quarter, as fans rode the surge of momentum into a crucial final stretch.

After a 3-pointer and a finish at the rim from Devin Vassell, San Antonio capped a 13-0 run to open the third quarter, closing the gap after trailing by as many as 19 points.

Stephon Castle picked up his fourth foul, but otherwise the second half has been all Spurs, with the Blazers’ lead down to three points about midway through the period.

Castle and De’Aaron Fox have 13 points each, while Victor Wembanyama has 11.

The energy took a sharp turn at The Rock at La Cantera during the second quarter of Game 4 as the Portland Trail Blazers surged ahead.

After a lively start, the San Antonio Spurs watch party grew noticeably quiet as the Blazers built a 17-point lead heading into halftime. Fans who were once standing and chanting sank back into their foldable chairs, many with hands on their heads as frustration set in.

Even with Victor Wembanyama back in the lineup, the mood shifted to concern. Spurs Jackals member Aidan Sterling said, “Portland came out swinging… shots just weren’t going our way,” while also noting, “their defense is really ramped up.” He added Wembanyama looked like “he’s missed a game or two,” but emphasized, “there’s multiple ways to impact the game… continue to assert your dominance and your physicality on defense.”

Despite the deficit, Sterling said the crowd is staying engaged, adding, “San Antonio’s been waiting for this… seven-year drought, we were hungry.” He also pointed out the Spurs Jackals are spread throughout the crowd, saying, “we got two different sections… all just aggregated into one spot,” helping keep chants going. “Even when we’re down… the energy’s still up… we’ve seen comebacks before,” he said.

San Antonio ripped off the first eight points of the second half, with back-to-back 3-pointers by Julian Champagnie and De’Aaron Fox cutting Portland’s lead to 58-49 with 9:26 to play in the third quarter.

Victor Wembanyama has a block and Champagnie has a steal in the opening minutes of the second half, as Portland is yet to score its first points of the period.

Amid brief injury scares for Stephon Castle and Dylan Harper, San Antonio struggled to connect on offense in the opening half of Game 4, falling into a 58-41 hole against Portland.

The Spurs shot just 34.8% in the opening half, and Portland’s bench outscored San Antonio’s 23-5. Victor Wembanyama, returning after missing Game 3 due to a concussion, has nine points on 4-of-12 shooting with seven rebounds, while De’Aaron Fox and Stephon Castle have both scored 10.

Castle checked out and briefly went to the locker room to have an injury to his left hand evaluated, but he returned to the game late in the secnod quarter. Harper was also slow to get up after a collision near the free-throw line, but he sat for only about a minute before returning to the game.

Stephon Castle went to the Spurs locker room to have an X-ray on his left hand, per ESPN’s broadcast, adding to a troubling afternoon for San Antonio as Portland takes control of Game 4.

A 13-0 run staked the Blazers to the largest lead of the day at 17 points with about midway through the second quarter. San Antonio opened the game shooting just 29.7% from the field.

Jerami Grant leads Portland with 11 points off the bench, while Deni Avdija has nine.

After San Antonio’s bench was a deciding factor in a Game 3 comeback, the Spurs reserves have been slow to get going in Sunday’s Game 4, as the Blazers bench outscored the group 14-0 in the opening quarter.

Luke Kornet, Dylan Harper and Harrison Barnes are a combined 0-for-5, while Keldon Johnson and Carter Bryant are yet to attempt a shot.

But the Spurs reserves also started Game 3 slow with only five points in the opening half before finishing with 35 points, highlighted by Harper’s 27.

The Blazers ripped off nine straight points over a span of just 63 seconds late in the opening quarter, pushing to a 25-23 lead as the period expired.

Spurs star Victor Wembanyama has been looking for his 3-point shot in his return after missing Game 3 due to a concussion, hitting 1 for 4 from beyond the arc. He has seven points, four rebounds, two assists and two blocks.

Victor Wembanyama was anything but hesitant in his return to the lineup Sunday, missing his first two shots and drawing a whistle for goaltending in the opening minute.

After sitting out Game 3 due to the NBA’s concussion protocol, Wembanyama has two points on 1-of-4 shooting with two rebounds, two assists, two blocks and a steal at the first timeout with 7:04 remaining in the opening quarter of Game 4 and the Spurs leading 12-7 after a 9-0 run.

Stephon Castle, who scored 33 points in the Spurs’ Game 3 win, has already knocked down a pair of 3-pointers.

The crowd continues to grow at The Rock at La Cantera for Game 4 between the San Antonio Spurs and Portland Trail Blazers.

Hundreds of fans – many arriving early with foldable chairs – have packed the watch party, creating a playoff-like atmosphere filled with jerseys, flags and constant chatter.

The biggest spark: Victor Wembanyama being cleared to play. His return has become the main topic across the crowd, with excitement building as fans await his impact.

Chants of “Go Spurs Go” started just before tipoff, with cheers breaking out as fans lock in for a crucial Game 4.

Longtime Spurs fans Daniel and Jennifer Grimes say they’re confident either way. Jennifer noted the team “did fantastic in Game 3” and said she’s thrilled Wembanyama is back but believes the Spurs can win regardless. Daniel described the atmosphere as “bringing back 1999 all over again,” calling the watch party a “home away from home” that feels like being inside the arena.

Jennifer added the crowd is full of “ride or die” fans, saying she’s supported the Spurs her whole life and loves being surrounded by others who share that same passion.

With Victor Wembanyama back after missing Game 3 due to the NBA’s concussion protocol, the San Antonio Spurs look to take a commanding lead in their opening-round series against the Portland Trail Blazers.

Already holding a 2-1 edge in the series after riding the rest of their young core to a win in Wembanyama’s absence, the No. 2 seed Spurs will tip off Game 4 against the No. 7 seed Blazers at 2:30 p.m. Sunday from the Moda Center in Portland, Ore. The matchup is set to air on ESPN.

San Antonio trailed by 15 points with about five minutes to play in the third quarter of Game 3 but used a 33-point night from Stephon Castle, a 27-point showing from rookie Dylan Harper and a strong all-around game from rookie Carter Bryant to rally, leading by as many as 15 points down the stretch.

Victor Wembanyama is available for Game 4 of the Spurs’ playoff series against the Trail Blazers on Sunday afternoon, the team announced via its injury report.

Wembanyama returns to the court after completing the NBA’s concussion protocol, which he entered last Tuesday night after slamming his head on the court in the first half of the Spurs’ 106-103 loss to Portland at Moda Center.

Playing without their leading scorer, rebounder and shot blocker, the Spurs grabbed a 2-1 series lead with a 120-108 win on Friday night behind Led by a combined 60 points from guards Stephon Castle and Dylan Harper.

Wembanyama scored 35 points to lead the Spurs to a 111-98 win in Game 1 on April 19 at the Frost Bank Center.
