EL PASO, TEXAS (KFOX14/CBS4) — Drivers in west El Paso should expect traffic disruptions as repairs to Cement Lake prompt multiple lane closures, with police urging the public to plan ahead to reduce impacts on the morning commute.
The El Paso Police Department said Wednesday night it is assisting with the listed lane closures while repairs are underway at Cement Lake.
The closures include:
– Loop 375 eastbound at the Race Track exit
– Loop 375 eastbound at Paisano
– Loop 375 westbound at Doniphan
– Doniphan at Race Track, both eastbound and westbound
– Doniphan at Paisano, both eastbound and westbound
– Sunland Park at Crocket
– McNutt at River Levee Road
According to the El Paso Fire Department, crews will also be staging units in the area as a precaution, adding that there is “no active emergency at this time.”
The closures come after El Paso Water warned residents that a dam in West El Paso could overflow and affect roads like Doniphan and Paisano.
According to El Paso Water, crews are working to reduce pressure on Cement Lake as they recognize that it could breach.
Cement Lake is located in an undeveloped pocket between I-10 and Doniphan Drive.
EPWater said it is coordinating with local agencies as crews work to maintain the structure.
The utility company added that it acquired Cement Lake and 300 surrounding acres in March from the Texas Department of Transportation as part of an open space acquisition.
EPWater said in a statement to KFOX14/CBS4 on Thursday that the road closures are precautionary and based on potential impact areas, and they will remain in place until risk is reduced and safety can be reassessed.
The utility urged residents to avoid closed roads and follow traffic guidance, and stay updated through official EPWater channels.
