EL PASO, Texas (KFOX14/CBS4) — The Guillen Middle School robotics team is made up of 5 students who design, build, code, and drive a robot.

KFOX14 Morning News Anchor Victoria Balderrama met with some of the students before they left for the robotics world championship in Saint Louis, Missouri.

“I do the strategies, and soon I’m going to be the coder,” Guillen Middle School Student, Azul Castillo said.

Azul Castillo is one of the three 6th graders on the team.

“In the robotics team, I do the driving,” Guillen Middle School Student Emiliano Talamantes said.

Two eighth graders on the team are responsible for other difficult tasks.

“It’s because we compete against high schools and I got ideas and I started brainstorming so I started sketching it,” Guillen Middle School Student, Renata Quinonez,

Three 6th graders and two 8th graders lead the Guillen Middle School robotics team- now in its second year. Azul Castillo was recruited to join when she was in elementary school.

“In fifth grade, they chose me to go to robotics but in that time, I was not very interesting, and I didn’t like the program until the coach asked me again and I decided that it could be cool,” Castillo said.

Cool doesn’t even begin to explain what these young students are doing. Renata Quinonez designed the robot based on her own imagination and with the help of her teammates.

“We added a rope so it can help it and not get it stuck,” Quinonez said.

The robotics coach, Daniel Gomez, said the Guillen Middle School robotics team has ranked highly not just in the City of El Paso but in the State of Texas and now they have a shot at the world’s competition in St. Louis, Missouri

It’s a real big deal. In just the middle school section alone there are 600 teams coming in from the world,” Gomez sad.

Going up against students from as far as Australia.

“I’m like the kids a little nervous because they’re going to see things that they’ve never seen before I mean they’re going to see robots that are way advanced than ours and which is excellent this is what I want to do to them to see,” Gomez said.

The Guillen Middle School robotics team competed Saturday and they’re expected to be back home later today. With or without a trophy they said they already planning for next year.
