LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – Texas Tech Athletics and quarterback Brendan Sorsby issued a statement mid-day Monday announcing Sorsby will take an immediate indefinite leave of absence, to enter a residential treatment program for a gambling addiction.
ESPN’s Pete Thamel reports, according to multiple sources, the NCAA is investigating Sorsby’s actions. Sources tell ESPN these developments came after the discovery of Sorsby making “thousands of online bets on a variety of sports via a gambling app”, which jeopardizes his eligibility with Tech.
The ESPN report states Sorsby bet on Indiana football when he was a redshirt freshman for Indiana in 2022. The bets, according to ESPN’s sources, were on Indiana to win and did not happen in a game in which Sorsby played. The NCAA updated its gambling restrictions in 2023. The NCAA declined to comment to ESPN.

The statement from Tech said the program is committed to supporting Sorsby through his recovery process and to ensure his long-term health and well-being.
“We love Brendan and support his decision to seek professional help,” Texas Tech head coach Joey McGuire said in the statement. “Taking this step requires courage, and our primary focus is on him as a person. Our program is behind Brendan as he prioritizes his health.”
The statement added that Texas Tech’s primary focus remains on fostering an environment where student-athletes feel empowered to prioritize their mental health and seek professional assistance.
To protect the integrity of the recovery process, Texas Tech announced it will have no further comment on Sorsby’s status or treatment progress at this time. “We kindly ask the media and the public to respect the privacy of Brendan and his family.”
Sorsby transferred to Tech from Cincinnati, as one of the highest-rated players in the portal this offseason. Quarterback Will Hammond is returning to Tech, but the timeline to return from an ACL team in October isn’t clear. Though the 2026 NFL Draft just happened this weekend, early 2027 draft projections listed Sorsby being picked high.
