Texas Tech starting quarterback Brendan Sorsby, who some already project as a Top 10 pick in next year’s NFL draft is taking an indefinite leave of absence from the Red Raiders’ football program to enter a residential treatment program for gambling addiction, the school announced Monday.
“We love Brendan and support his decision to seek professional help,” Texas Tech coach Joey McGuire said. “Taking this step requires courage, and our primary focus is on him as a person. Our program is behind Brendan as he prioritizes his health.”
Sorsby’s college eligibility is in jeopardy after it was discovered that he has made thousands of online sports bets through a gambling app, according to ESPN. The NCAA forbids athletes from gambling on college and pro sports, and it is investigating Sorsby’s betting activity, the ESPN report says.
Sorsby, who grew up in Denton, began his college career at Indiana, but transferred to Cincinnati after the 2023 season.
Sorsby started two years at Cincinnati, including throwing for 2,800 yards with 27 touchdowns and 5 interceptions last season, which made him one of the most sought-after players in the transfer portal.
Behren Morton, Texas Tech’s starter from last year, was picked in the seventh round by the New England Patriots in last weekend’s NFL draft. The Red Raiders return Will Hammond, who appeared in eight games last season, including two starts, but he tore his ACL in October and is unlikely to be ready for the season opener. Hammond threw for 680 yards with seven touchdowns and three interceptions last season.

Texas Tech opens the season Sept. 5 against Abilene Christian plays its Big 12 opener against Houston on Sept. 18 in Lubbock.
