The Boston Red Sox Might Actually Have History On Their Side

While the Boston Red Sox look to have no direction or purpose from ownership, history says they’re right on schedule to win again.

Even after putting 17 runs on the board on Saturday, the brass of the Boston Red Sox felt it was time for a major overhaul. As of Saturday, the Red Sox have fired Alex Cora and the majority of his coaching staff.

MLB insiders and Red Sox nation weighed in on the changes. While acknowledging that change was ultimately the endgame at some point, some wonder if the fingers pointed are in the wrong direction.

All season long, fans have been on ownership’s case for not caring enough about the product to help the franchise keep up with a very competitive division. Earlier in the season, chants of “sell the team” could be heard very clearly on broadcasts. They were heard by the majority owner, John Henry, too.

In 2003, the Red Sox fired Grady Little after a loss to the New York Yankees in the ALCS. They hired Terry Francona as Little’s replacement, and he helped the Sox win their first World Series in almost 90 years.

The same sequence happened in 2012. The Red Sox fired Bobby Valentine after a disappointing season, and John Farrell led the Sox to a championship in 2013. After Farrell didn’t make it past 2017, Alex Cora entered and won the World Series in 2018.
