DALLAS — The Dallas Police Department’s Underwater Recovery Team took to Fish Trap Lake Wednesday for what they’re calling “Operation Dive into a Cleaner Dallas.”

Pull abandoned vehicles out of the water, some of which could be tied to thefts or other crimes, while helping keep local lakes safer and cleaner.

By 2:40 p.m., DPD said the team had already recovered eight vehicles out of the nine they detected. Each car is now being checked to see if they are connected to any ongoing or past investigations.

This isn’t the first time Dallas police have gone underwater for a cleanup.

Back in June, crews recovered several cars from the pond at Lake Cliff Park. Those vehicles dated back as far as the early 1980s and even came from cities as far away as Houston. All were either stolen or involved in crimes. Police said they found them during a routine cleaning, something that hadn’t been done at the pond in about a decade.

“The goal is to remove abandoned vehicles from our waterways, both for public safety and to aid ongoing investigations,” DPD said. They also said more recovery missions are planned at other lakes throughout the year.
