LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – Much cooler air is settling into the South Plains today and will stick around through at least Saturday morning, bringing a welcome break from recent fire weather conditions.

A cold front moved through the region Tuesday night, knocking temperatures down to around five degrees below late-April averages. Clouds will limit sunshine Wednesday, and low clouds may briefly develop early in the morning.

The main impact arrives late Thursday into Friday, when periods of showers and a few thunderstorms are expected.

Some storms could produce locally heavy rainfall, and widespread totals of 1 inch or more are possible across much of the South Plains and surrounding areas, especially on Friday. Drier air is expected to move in Friday night.
