Metro Elementary School of Design unveils two new libraries to boost student literacy

Corpus Christi school reveals renovated historic library and new early childhood space designed to inspire reading.

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Students and staff at Metro Elementary School of Design in Corpus Christi are celebrating the unveiling of two newly renovated libraries designed to boost literacy and student engagement.

School leaders revealed both spaces for the first time, including a fully renovated main library inside the campus’ historic 1936 building and a brand-new second library created specifically for pre-K and kindergarten students.

Metro Elementary Principal Justin Milner said the additions were designed to meet student needs while creating an environment that makes reading exciting.

“We have two libraries now at Metro Elementary… it’s a whole new library,” Milner said. “We also added a second library for our pre-K and kinder students.”

The main library features a unique antique pirate ship theme that blends the school’s history with a creative design. The early childhood library offers a different feel, centered around nursery rhymes and age-appropriate learning.

Milner said the second library was necessary because younger students cannot access the upstairs library in the historic building.

“We need literacy for our pre-K students… we wanted to make it very special for them,” he said.

Corpus Christi Independent School District (CCISD) leaders said the renovations are part of a broader effort to improve learning spaces and encourage a love of reading.

“The most important thing is to get students in the library where they love to be and continue loving to read,” said CCISD Superintendent Dr. Rolan Hernandez.

The project marks another milestone for the district, which has now renovated more than 20 libraries across campuses. 

School officials say the goal is to create spaces that not only support education but also inspire students to pick up a book both at school and at home.

The libraries were kept a surprise for students and staff until the official reveal, adding to the excitement for the school community.
