Texas A&M plans more than $400M in new construction

  • April 30, 2026

COLLEGE STATION, Texas (KBTX) – Texas A&M is planning to spend more than $400 million on new buildings as part of an ambitious push to grow the university.

The Board of Regents got a detailed look at the plan on Tuesday.

Interim Texas A&M President Tommy Williams laid out a sweeping financial plan, covering everything from athletics to student housing. He said the goal is to keep Texas A&M competitive and keep students first.

Athletics funding took center stage first, driven by the rapidly changing world of NIL, the system that allows college athletes to profit from their name, image and likeness.

“Excellence in athletics is very important. Part of the reason it was featured so much is that the Regents wanted the spotlight on that. They asked for information about that. So we’re responding to what they asked for,” Williams said.

Three major construction projects total more than $409 million — a veterinary building, a space collaboration facility and a player development center.

To keep those projects on track, Texas A&M created a new executive facilities committee that meets monthly to review and rank all major requests.

“When we put together these five-year capital plans, the debt over the next five years doesn’t look alarming at all,” said David Baggett, chairman of the Committee on Finance.

By fiscal year 2028, Texas A&M wants to overhaul West Campus, adding new housing, student services and a parking garage.

“I think it’s just important for them to know not only about the things that we have funded and identified the funding for, but the things that we know we need and we’re looking for the funding. We want to make sure they understand what all our needs are,” Williams said.

President Williams noted that he is excited about A&M’s future under the new President, Dr. Susan Ballabina.
