James Broadnax, convicted of killing two music producers outside a Garland studio in 2008, is set to die today by lethal injection.
Broadnax was 20 years old when he was sentenced to death for the robbery and killing of Stephan Swan, 26, and Matthew Butler, 28. At the time, he said he wanted to die so badly that he would do it himself if the state did not.
Now 37, Broadnax said he has transformed on death row, where he mentors youth, found God, got married and has asked for forgiveness.
Broadnax has exhausted nearly every avenue for an appeal. The U.S. Supreme Court is weighing one final petition that argues Broadnax did not pull the trigger.
This would mark the third execution so far this year in Texas.
Dallas Morning News reporter Jamie Landers and photographer Juan Figueroa, who have followed the case, will witness the execution Thursday evening in Huntsville. Beginning this afternoon, The News will provide a look back at the case and Broadnax’s time on death row, as well as updates as they develop.
