As severe weather continues to pummel San Antonio, one local staple has announced it’s closing for visitors for the day.
The San Antonio Zoo announced the temporary closure through a Facebook post on Friday, May 1, at 9:15 a.m. — just minutes after its usual 9 a.m. opening time.
“Due to inclement weather, San Antonio Zoo will be closed today, Friday, May 1. We plan to reopen Saturday, May 2,” the post reads. “Our next Locals Day is on May 10. We look forward to seeing you soon!”
At the time of writing, the National Weather Service’s local Austin/San Antonio office has issued a flood warning through 9 p.m. on May 1. Additionally, a flood advisory and flash flood warning are in effect throughout the morning. Locals should exercise caution when traveling today, as the NWS warns of “life-threatening flooding,” low water crossings and rainfall totaling two to four inches or more in some areas. Additionally, the NWS says rivers, creeks, streams, urban areas and others with poor drainage could be prone to flooding quickly. .
The zoo isn’t the only thing impacted by the severe weather. Thousands of residents across the city were temporarily without power on the morning of May 1, and at least 30 roads were closed due to flooding. Multiple San Antonio-area schools noted that bus routes would proceed with caution, and one district delayed its start times for the day. Additionally, Military Appreciation Day at the Great Texas Airshow was nixed amid the storms, though the main events on Saturday, May 2, and Sunday, May 3, are expected to go on as scheduled.
