Corpus Christi mayor Paulette Guajardo took a plunge at the People’s Street T-Head in the annual Buc Days tradition.

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Corpus Christi mayor Paulette Guajardo continued the “Dunking of the Mayor” Buc Days tradition on Thursday afternoon at the People’s Street T-Head in Downtown Corpus Christi. This was her sixth time taking the plunge, her first being back in 2021 after being elected in November 2020.

The dunking is just one of many traditions tied to Buc Days a weeks-long celebration that highlights the Coastal Bend’s culture, community and coastal roots. Each year, Buc Days brings a mix of family-friendly events and long-standing traditions to downtown Corpus Christi, drawing both locals and visitors to the waterfront.

From parades and rodeo events to live music and carnival rides, the festival offers something for all ages. The Buccaneer Days Parade remains one of the signature attractions, featuring colorful floats, marching bands and community organizations. Meanwhile, the carnival along the bayfront provides games, food and entertainment throughout the duration of the event.

Beyond the festivities, Buc Days also carries a larger purpose. Proceeds from many of its events go toward scholarships for local students, reinforcing its role as both a celebration and a community investment. Organizers and volunteers work year-round to ensure the tradition continues to grow while maintaining its historic charm.

 “We’re able to offer scholarships to these young men and women that are our future without a doubt,” said Alex Garcia, an organizer of the event for the past 29 years before he read a proclamation ordering Guajardo to jump.
