EL PASO, Texas (KFOX14/CBS4) — As the Borderland is days away from the BTS concerts, El Paso County presented the K-Pop band with an award and recognized a fan group for bringing fans together.

On Monday, during the County Commissioners meeting, county leaders approved two resolutions, one presenting the “Estimado Amigo” award to the South Korean group and declaring the concert dates May 2 and 3, “El Paso BTS Weekend,” and a second resolution recognizing the fan group, “El Paso TX Official BTS ARMY GROUP,” for bringing together fans in the Borderland.

The “amigo” award presented to RM, Jin, Suga, j-hope, Jimin, V and Jung Kook– the seven members of BTS– was presented not only to recognize how the band’s tour stop in El Paso has raised the profile of the city, but also to celebrate BTS’s music promoting social causes.

Meanwhile, the fan group “El Paso TX Official BTS ARMY GROUP” was recognized for the various things the County said the fan group did to strengthen the fan community, things like raising funds to light up the Franklin Mountains Star purple for seven nights, from April 28 to May 4, and hosting fan events bringing together fans from El Paso and Ciudad Juarez.

Furthermore, Visit El Paso’s Executive Director, Brooke Underwood, revealed projections of $75 million as the economic impact the concerts could leave in the region.

After the resolution passed, Mariachi Corazones de San Jose, a mariachi group with students of all ages, from pre-K to 8th grade, performed for BTS fans in attendance, and were followed by Paydirt Pete and cheer members from the University of Texas at El Paso, who performed a cheer for BTS.

The ceremony was held at 9:30 a.m., at the Alicia Chacon Commissioner Courtroom, on the third floor of the Enrique Moreno County Courthouse, located at 500 E. San Antonio Ave.
