April was a wild month for San Antonio, with the Spurs making it past the first round in the 2026 NBA playoffs and Fiesta getting rained out for several days. The local restaurant scene also took a pretty big hit with several closures that took place over the last few weeks.
In the middle of all this, a small batch of new restaurants and bars was able to get off the ground in April, bringing something fresh to the table. Let’s take a look at the biggest San Antonio closures and a few notable openings that happened over the last month.
A car crashed into the Las Palapas location on Callaghan in March, and a month later, the San Antonio chain decided to close the business temporarily to make updates. It is expected to reopen on May 15.
The Koffee Kup Co.
The Koffee Kup Co. was one of the few coffee shops open in the Jefferson area throughout its eight-year run. The cafe ended its time on Donaldson Avenue on April 19.
Chef Matt Garcia has put Gigi’s Deli on hold while he works on a new concept, Miles. Customers can anticipate the craft sandwich concept to return later this year.
After months of uncertainty, Tacopolis folded as a concept, but chef Alex Paredes plans to reuse the space for a new idea, which he named El Fish Demon.
Technically, Lowcountry is sticking around through the end of May, so you still have time to visit the beloved Southtown dive bar, which announced its closure on April 15.
With all these restaurants and bars on the way out, San Antonio also saw a handful of newcomers launch throughout April.
