School officials said callers may spoof phone numbers and demand personal information or payment from students and staff.
CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi is warning students and staff about scam phone calls falsely claiming to be from the University Police Department.
Officials say several people have reported receiving calls from individuals posing as UPD officers. In some cases, scammers are able to disguise their phone number so it appears the call is coming from the department’s non-emergency line.
The callers may try to pressure victims into acting quickly or ask for personal information or money. Officials say scammers may request payment through cash, PayPal or Bitcoin.
The university is urging anyone who receives one of these calls not to share personal or financial information or send money.
Anyone with questions is asked to contact the University Police Department directly through its non-emergency number.
