Texas high school baseball state champion eliminated from playoffs

Grapevine High School’s baseball team’s hopes of capturing a third straight state title were unexpectedly dashed before the playoffs even began. 

On Wednesday, The Dallas Morning News reported that the Mustangs had been disqualified from the state playoffs after self-reporting the use of an ineligible player. 

“On April 29, Grapevine-Colleyville ISD self-reported the participation of an ineligible Grapevine High School player during the 2025-2026 baseball season,” the University Interscholastic League’s statement said to DMN in a statement. “Per the UIL Constitution & Contest Rules, the minimum penalty is forfeiture of all games in which the player participated. As a result, Grapevine High School has withdrawn from the UIL state baseball playoffs.”

According to district officials, the athlete didn’t meet the requirements outlined in Section 442 of the Constitution and Rules because the student’s residence was within the school attendance zone. According to WFAA, the player was ruled eligible at the beginning of the season based on the information the district was given, but after further investigation, the school reported otherwise.

“We realize this news is deeply disappointing for our players, families, and fans, and it is not the ending anyone envisioned for this season,” Grapevine-Colleyville ISD said in a statement to WFAA. “However, we refuse to compromise our commitment to the rules and the values of honesty and sportsmanship. Our focus now remains on supporting our student-athletes and helping them navigate this challenge with the same resilience they demonstrate on the field.”

Grapevine won the UIL Class 5A Division I state championships in 2024 and 2025 and is ranked No. 8 by Baseball America among high school baseball teams in the country. The program had a chance to be the first high school since Brenham in 1986-88 to win three straight state titles. 

According to the Denton Record-Chronicle, with the Mustangs out of contention, Denton Ryan High School will represent District 6-5A as the second seed in the Division I bracket because it has the highest enrollment among the district’s four current playoff teams (including Heritage). It will face Aledo in the bi-district round. According to the Dallas Morning News, the three-game series will start Thursday, April 30, at 7:30 p.m. at Mansfield Summit High School and will continue with a 7:30 p.m. Friday game and a 1 p.m. Saturday game, if necessary.

Colleyville Heritage, which was supposed to begin its playoff series against Aledo on Wednesday night, will now face Fort Worth Chisholm Trail in the Class 5A Division II bracket. The games are set for 11:30 a.m. Thursday, April 30, and 7 p.m. Friday, May 1, at Chisholm Trail, with a game time set for noon on Saturday if necessary.
