If you haven’t voted yet in Port Aransas ISD’s $8.2 million bond election, you have until 7 p.m. today (Saturday, May 2) to cast a ballot.

Voting will take place until 7 p.m. at the Community Center. The building recently re-opened to the public after a $1.1 million renovation of the 408 N. Alister St. building. (A story on the renovation was in the South Jetty’s April 23 edition.)

According to an election official, a total of 191 people cast ballots in early voting, which ended on Tuesday, April 28.

The bond issue is composed of three separate propositions covering proposed general, recreational and technological upgrades at Port Aransas ISD.

Proposition 1 would create a $4.9 million fund to cover smaller needs such as purchasing library books and instruction materials and installing additional lockers, plus larger projects like constructing a new playground at H.G. Olsen Elementary School, furnishing Brundrett Middle School’s Career Launching Labs (which will be relocating into the old BMS band hall once the new Jim and Judy Cole Performing Arts Center is in full operation) and updating the Port Aransas High School chemistry lab.

The $2.85 million Proposition 2 would be for recreational use, with most of these funds earmarked for district athletics.

Proposition 3 will ask for $1.75 million for technology needs across the school district. Those include Chromebooks and workstation upgrades for students and staff and updating the interactive displays in school classrooms.

Prop 3 would also cover improvements to the school district’s network and security infrastructure.

PAISD Superintendent Sharon McKinney has said the school district can afford to pay off the bond without raising its 7.2 cents-per-$100 valuation interest and-sinking tax rate, which is based on a conservative 2 percent property value growth rate assumption.

There are no candidate races for Port Aransas voters to decide in this election because no one filed to challenge the incumbents who filed for reelection to the city council, school board and Nueces County Water Control and Improvement District No. 4 Board of Directors.
