After nearly a year of being empty, a nostalgic San Antonio building will soon welcome customers again. If you’re a local, you may have fuzzy childhood memories of visiting on an early weekend morning.
Bandera Flea Market, located on the city’s Northwest side, officially shut down on Monday, June 30, 2025, the current property manager, Barbara Tovar, tells MySA. Some guests who frequented the spot were left unsure about why and whether it had a future, according to social media posts and Google Reviews for the business. Over the years, it had become a go-to spot for finding miscellaneous treats such as clothing, jewelry, and baked goods.
Many online reviewers described the environment as friendly and praised the fair prices at which vendors were selling their products. One customer, Margot Ybarra, wrote about how it was “a great place for people to hang out,” especially during the warmer seasons. San Antonio isn’t particularly low on flea markets, but many of them operate outside, which can be uncomfortable depending on the weather. With its location at 1331 Bandera Road, there was also easy access from Loop 410 and foot traffic from St. Mary’s University students.
Still, in 2022, a plan for change was put into action. A Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation filing shows that during August of that year, a renovation filing worth half a million dollars was submitted to the state. The report described upcoming tasks as including a front exterior remodel and associated site work. At the time, the estimated time of completion was expected for March 2026. It appears that the alterations have gone as planned because the grand opening is nearly here.
The property’s first 24 hours as the Shops at Bandera Road is on Saturday, May 2, according to Tovar. At roughly 56,000 square feet, it will appear much more modern than you remember. This time around, it also includes a billiard hall, a sports bar, and a food court.
“We want to create a new elevated shopping experience for new and used items in hopes of getting away from the ‘flea market’ stigma,” Tovar previously told MySA. “The area is being revitalized by new businesses, both locally and nationally owned … There is no business like ours in the vicinity, and we are excited to bring a breath of new life to this area.”
There will be over 100 vendors. Some of the confirmed businesses are Little Treasures, Adelore Fashion Boutique, Wick3d Love, Fern’s Goodies, and Olfactory Obsession. Folks can expect a mix of sports merchandise, designer vintage clothing, jewelers, custom perfumers, vinyl records, and more, Tovar says.
Its operating hours will be 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Thursday through Sunday, according to the property’s social media page. Photos shared with MySA show a colorful interior with long hallways, bohemian-style lamps, and tons of seating.
As of mid-April, the retail hub was still accepting new tenants. Around that time, Tovar was offering sellers at Painted Tree Boutiques locations a discount after the chain closed all its locations. The price to rent a space starts at $470. Businesses can learn more by visiting the website.
