With Mississippi State visiting UFCU Disch-Falk Field, Texas baseball was unable to win an SEC series.

Two big swings from the bottom of the Mississippi State batting order helped Mississippi State turn a pitching duel into a 7-4 win on Saturday afternoon. Mississippi State’s five-run win evened this weekend’s series in Austin, which opened with Friday’s 3-1 victory for the Longhorns.

Ranked fourth and 10th in the D1Baseball poll, Texas (34-10, 14-8) and Mississippi State (36-11, 14-9) will now decide their series on Sunday.

Over the first five innings on Saturday, Texas and Mississippi State traded solo homers as starting pitchers Ruger Riojas and Duke Stone shined on the mound. But Texas went to its bullpen in the sixth session, and Mississippi State pounded an inning later.

With two outs and two runners aboard in the seventh inning, Mississippi State broke a 1-1 tie with Kevin Milewski’s RBI single off of Thomas Burns. The Bulldogs then broke the game open on a three-run homer from Drew Wyers. Milewski and Wyers bat eighth and ninth in the Mississippi State lineup.

Texas scored three times in the ninth inning, but Anthony Pack Jr. with the bases loaded to end the game. The Longhorns produced nine hits and drew 10 walks on Saturday, but Texas left 17 runners on base and failed to turn bases-loaded opportunities in the sixth, seventh and eighth innings into any runs.

Texas and Mississippi State will return to UFCU Disch-Falk Field at 1 p.m. on Sunday afternoon. Senior Luke Harrison (4-2, 3.93 ERA) will start on the mound for the Longhorns while Charlie Foster (0-2, 5.67 ERA) will be the first pitcher out for Mississippi State.

Texas came up short after making things interesting in its final at-bat. Adrian Rodriguez led off the ninth inning with the second homer of his season, and Aiden Robbins eventually cut further into the Mississippi State lead with a two-run single. The Longhorns later loaded the bases and brought the game-winning run to the plate, but freshman outfielder Anthony Pack Jr. struck out against Dane Burns to end the game.

Texas will have one more chance to complete a comeback. Adrian Rodriguez, Ethan Mendoza and Temo Becerra, who are responsible for four of the Longhorns’ six hits today, are due up for Texas in the final frame.

Texas once again left the bases loaded as Anthony Pack Jr.’s flyout to left field stranded three runners. That out also probably ended Pack’s hitting streak. A freshman, Pack had gotten a hit in each of his last 17 games.

Texas has left the bases loaded in each of the last three innings. The Longhorns last scored on Casey Borba’s solo homer in the fifth frame.

The Bulldogs are pulling away with this one. In the eighth inning, Mississippi State scored on a run-scoring groundout and Bryce Chance’s RBI double as Texas relievers Jason Flores and Brody Walls were unable to get through the frame unscathed.

For the second straight scoreless inning, Texas left the bases loaded. Temo Becerra grounded into a fielder’s choice to end the inning, and an out call of Ethan Mendoza at second base was upheld after a short review. Ahead of that seventh-inning at-bat, Becerra had been 3-for-3 with three singles.

After Brett Crossland hit two batters in the seventh inning, he was replaced on the mound with two outs by Thomas Burns. A junior right-hander, Burns had a chance to escape the jam before Mississippi State’s Kevin Milewski turned a 1-2 pitch into an RBI single. Drew Wyers, who entered this game with a .320 batting average but hits ninth in the Mississippi State lineup, then blew this game open with a three-run homer.

Mississippi State made one pitching change that it wanted in the sixth inning, and one that it didn’t. To begin the sixth inning, the Bulldogs replaced starter Duke Stone after an 86-pitch outing in which he allowed five hits while striking out five batters. However, Mississippi State reliever Ben Davis lasted just eight pitches before his day was cut short by an undisclosed injury.

Mississippi State’s Jack Bauer inherited a runner on first base, and Texas eventually loaded the bases against the freshman left-hander. Bauer, however, got Maddox Monsour to ground out to end the frame.

Texas made a pitching change ahead of the sixth inning as Brett Crossland replaced Rugar Riojas on the mound. In the sixth inning, Crossland struck out the side.

Riojas threw just 71 pitches on Saturday. He struck out seven batters while allowing three hits and no walks.

Former Texas catcher Taylor Teagarden was honored between the fifth and sixth inning as part of UT’s TraDISCHions series. Teagarden also threw out the ceremonial first pitch ahead of today’s game.

Teagarden played at Texas from 2003-05, and his 1,412 career putouts rank third in the school’s record books. He was the starting catcher for the Longhorns’ 2005 national championship team.

Texas tied this game on Casey Borba’s one-out homer to left field. Borba went without a homer for the first 13 games of April before going deep in Tuesday’s 15-14 win over Sam Houston. He now has 12 homers, which ranks third on the Texas roster.

We finally have some offense at UFCU Disch-Falk Field. With two outs in the inning, Mississippi State’s Jacob Parker homered into the visitor’s bullpen. That solo shot was the ninth homer of Parker’s season.

One day after Texas and Mississippi State combined for four runs and 11 hits, another pitcher’s duel is brewing at UFCU Disch-Falk Field. Through three innings, UT starter Ruger Riojas has struck out six batters. Duke Stone is throwing a one-hitter for the Bulldogs.

Both teams have one hit and have gotten a runner to second base this afternoon, but this game remains scoreless. Texas stranded Temo Becerra with a flyout to end the second inning.

Between the first and second innings, the UFCU Disch-Falk Field crowd took time to acknowledge Texas legend Keith Moreland on his 72nd birthday. A member of UT’s 1975 championship team who had this No. 3 retired in 2010, Moreland is working in the Texas radio booth this afternoon.

Mississippi State provided an early firework with Ace Reese’s one-out double, but UT pitcher Ruger Riojas got out of the jam with two strikeouts. Last night, the Bulldogs struck out a season-high 19 times against four different UT pitchers.
