Schertz police say vehicle fire shut down I-35 near San Antonio

A portion of a major Texas highway is shut down after police say a vehicle in flames is what caused the closure. 

The Schertz Police Department said in a post on social media that I-35 southbound is closed at Schertz Parkway due to a vehicle fire. The fire was reported by officials at about 3 a.m. on Sunday, May 3. “All traffic is being diverted onto the access road. Please expect delays and use caution if traveling in the area. Consider alternate routes if possible,” the Schertz PD said.

At the time of the initial report, the Schertz Parkway overpass was also shut down. However, in an update at 6:12 a.m., the Schertz PD said the overpass was reopened, but the interstate highway remained closed. The Schertz police department added that the driver of the vehicle did not receive any injuries from the fire. 

The traffic from I-35 South between FM-3009/N B Caverns Road/Exit 175 and Schertz Pky/Exit 174, is backed up to Weiderstein Road/Exit 176, according to traffic reporting site SigAlert. Traffic has been stop-and-go in the area, with some delays being up to only five minutes, SigAlert reports. A look at the Texas Department of Transportation cameras shows where traffic is being diverted in the area.
