Drivers with cars still parked in a Downtown Houston garage have until 5 p.m. Sunday to move them before the structure is demolished.

No new vehicles are permitted to park in the garage.

Beginning Monday, regular access to the Avenida de las Americas between McKinney and Lamar streets will be restricted to Hilton valet-only traffic. In addition, Polk Street between Chartres and Jackson streets will be closed to all traffic.

Pedestrian and bicycle traffic, which is already discontinued along Polk Street between Chartres and ADLA, will also be discontinued through Jackson Street starting Monday. Cyclists traveling between East Downtown and Downtown have been rerouted along Rusk Street.

Work at the Polk Street garage follows demolition on the sky bridge between the George R. Brown Convention Center and the garage, which began last week. Construction will take about 1,500 parking spaces out of circulation, according to KHOU 11.

Houston First is advising drivers to plan ahead and reserve available parking online using parking apps like ParkMobile, ParkWhiz, Spot Hero and Parking.com. Construction is also underway at a 1,000-space garage at Bell and Chenevert streets, slated to complete in early fall.
