The Corpus Christi ISD school board has been recognized by H-E-B as the best school board in the state.
The Corpus Christi Independent School District Board of Trustees won $25,000 for the school district through the H-E-B Excellence in Education Awards on May 3.
The annual H-E-B award competition receives nominations from across the state and awards educators and schools with funds. H-E-B has awarded almost $15 million to winners since 2002.
Corpus Christi ISD won in the school board category.
The Alice Independent School District was named best small school district, winning $50,000. Alice ISD was also a finalist in the school board category.
“This recognition from H-E-B is an incredible honor for our Board of Trustees,” Corpus Christi ISD Superintendent Roland Hernandez said in a CCISD news release. “H-E-B’s unwavering support of public education makes this award especially meaningful. This achievement reflects the hard work, leadership and dedication of our trustees, alongside the commitment of our students, staff and families, who make excellence possible every day.”

No other winners were located in the Coastal Bend this year.
However, Carroll High School teacher Deanna Evans was recognized as one of five state finalists in the Rising Star teacher category.
The Gregory-Portland Independent School District’s Early Childhood Center was a finalist in the early childhood category.
Semifinalists for the competition were judged by education students at Texas State University and Trinity University. Regional judging panels of school administrators, community leaders and former winners chose the finalists, and a statewide panel of judges determined winners. There was a separate judging panel for the early childhood, school board and school district contests.
The Alice Independent School District was named small school district of the year at the 2026 H-E-B Excellence in Education awards.
The judges conducted site visits to determine winners.
“In every corner of Texas, educators are guiding students through a rapidly changing world while helping them build confidence, curiosity and a sense of possibility,” Winell Herron, H-E-B senior vice president of public affairs, diversity and environmental affairs, said in a news release.
“At a time when the role of public education is more important than ever, we are proud to recognize these exceptional leaders who are strengthening not only their classrooms, but their communities and the future of our state.”
