Footage released by the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office shows Sheriff Javier Salazar had a green light when he entered an intersection and T-boned a car near downtown.
The crash occurred about 3:30 p.m. Saturday at the Guadalupe Street intersection on South Pecos La Trinidad, a one-way street that is the access road of Interstate 10.
Salazar was driving a county-issued SUV after leaving the Bexar County jail, where he said he had been handling a personnel matter. He was a mile away from the facility when the crash occurred.
The footage shows Salazar entering the intersection on a green light, just as silver Toyota Camry also enters the intersection. Salazar then T-bones the car on its passenger side.
An elderly woman was taken to a hospital by EMS as a precaution after reporting chest pain, the sheriff said.
Salazar had addressed the crash himself about six hours later during a news conference Saturday for an unrelated arrest.
“I’m fine,” he said. “There was an outpouring of support. People have been calling. Thankfully I wasn’t hurt in the crash.”
Salazar said a sheriff’s office traffic deputy is investigating the crash. San Antonio police were only at the scene for traffic control, a police spokesperson said.
The county-issued SUV is insured by the county, Salazar said, and it was taken to a county body shop after the crash.
