The Houston Texans’ lease at Reliant Stadium is set to expire after the 2032 season. Franchise leadership said Monday they’re committed to keeping the Texans at their current stadium beyond the lease’s expiration, with renovations in mind rather than building a new stadium.
The Texans share Reliant Stadium with the Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo, a unique partnership in which the two entities lease the stadium from Harris County. The shared space creates headaches for the Texans, though they aren’t eyeing a split anytime soon, per Texans chairman and owner Cal McNair.
“The talks are ongoing. They’ve been going on for quite some time,” McNair said Monday regarding negotiations with the Rodeo and Harris County. “What we’ve talked to the Rodeo [about] is we’re going to make it work. We’ll figure out a way to make it work and have everybody a winner in this thing, as well.”
Texans president Mike Tomon shared a similar sentiment Monday. Tomon said the Texans value the location of Reliant Park, which sits just off Interstate 610 in southeast Houston.
“The focus is Reliant Park. That is our focus,” Tomon said. “The reason we feel that is, if you take a step back, and you look at Reliant Park, and just the attributes of it: you have 350 continuous acres on major arteries with 610 in the soon-to-be third-largest city in the United States. Like, that is pretty special.
“So, when we think about our partnership with the Rodeo, we’re aligned to do everything we can do to make it work on that specific site, because we think it can be transformative for the city of Houston.”
Tomon added on Monday that the Texans plan to continue renovations at Reliant Stadium in the coming months, including upgrades to the 200 and 400 levels before the World Cup comes to Houston’s home stadium in June. Tomon added Monday that the team’s home stadium is an “older building,” one that needs continued investment from both the Texans and the Harris County Sports & Convention Corporation.”
Even though Reliant Stadium will be approaching its 25th season in 2026, there are no plans for demolition or replacement. The Texans are committed to their current stadium location, where they have played for the past 24 years.
Reliant Stadium opened in 2002, marking the Texans’ inaugural season. For the past 12 years, the stadium has been known as NRG Stadium. However, in 2026, it will revert to its original name, Reliant Stadium, following a decision made by Reliant Energy, a subsidiary of NRG Energy.
