EL PASO, TEXAS (KFOX14/CBS4) — The El Paso Mexican American Cultural Center is inviting the public to a free Cinco de Mayo celebration this weekend to highlight the history, culture, and traditions of Puebla.
The celebration will take place on Saturday, May 9, from 2 to 6 p.m. and will feature live performances, hands-on activities, dance, chef demonstrations, and culinary experiences.
“For our second annual Cinco de Mayo celebration at the MACC, we invite our community to dive into the history of the celebration,” said Mexican American Cultural Center Director Rebecca Munoz. “Visitors will have the opportunity to learn about Poblano culture and the legacy of the Battle of Puebla through performances, hands-on activities, and chef demos.”
Cinco de Mayo commemorates a Mexican victory over French troops at the Battle of Puebla. France’s military was in Mexico to try to establish a monarchy and limit the growing influence of the United States. The Battle of Puebla and Cinco de Mayo are seen as symbols of Mexico’s resistance to invaders.
