The River Walk is one of San Antonio’s biggest claims to fame — and sometimes its biggest source of viral moments. At this point, we all know never to get in the water (like, no matter what), but there’s one other question not everyone knows the answer to: drinking. So, what rules are there surrounding alcohol consumption along this major tourist hotspot? Here’s what to know.
Of course, there are numerous bars and restaurants along the River Walk that sell alcoholic beverages. But what is the rule surrounding open containers?
Alcohol consumption is generally prohibited in San Antonio city parks, except by permit or at designated sites. The River Walk is one of those exceptions, as you are allowed to have open containers at any point along the river level. That probably helps with the tourism.
There are nearly 50 parks, sports complexes, golf courses and other facilities where drinking is green-lit, and many of them neighbor the River Walk, such as the historic La Villita and Market Square, Hemisfair, the San Antonio Zoo and more. Keep in mind, however, that smoking is definitely not allowed at city parks, plazas, trails, pools, or playgrounds — including the River Walk.
A spokesperson for the San Antonio Police Department told MySA via email that glass beverage containers are not allowed at the River Walk. More information on where glass containers are disallowed is available in the municipal code.
Short answer: no. The SAPD spokesperson told MySA that alcoholic beverages must be purchased from a licensed vendor.
