Carson Tinney had another good Tuesday at the ballpark.

Tinney’s grand slam in the bottom of the eighth inning was the difference in the Texas baseball team’s 11-8 win over UTSA on Tuesday night. With the victory in its final midweek game of the season, Texas improved to 36-10 on the season.

Tuesday’s game featured a handful of momentum swings. Texas scored four times in the first frame, UTSA went up 7-4 in the third inning and the Longhorns then tied the game in the third inning’s bottom half. After the seventh inning, however, the Roadrunners were clinging to an 8-7 advantage.

In the bottom of the eighth inning, Texas loaded the bases with one out against UTSA relievers Sam Simmons and Connor Kelley. That brought up Tinney, who quickly crushed a 1-1 offering from Kelley over the fence in left field. That 483-foot bomb was the 17th homer of Tinney’s season and the longest baseball hit by a Longhorn this season.

Tinney’s homer also came exactly one week after he hit a walkoff homer at UFCU Disch-Falk Field against Sam Houston.

While Tinney provided the night’s biggest highlight and Texas freshman Maddox Monsour homered for the first time in his collegiate career, UT coach Jim Schlossnagle argued afterwards that “Brody (Walls) was the story.” A freshman right-hander, Walls provided Texas with a solid performance out of the bullpen after veterans Max Grubbs and Ethan Walker were tagged for seven early runs. Walls allowed one hit and one walk over 3 ⅔ innings, and he also struck out five Roadrunners.

By beating UTSA (33-15) and avenging last year’s season-ending loss in the NCAA Tournament, UT finished this regular season with a 9-2 showing in midweek games. Texas will shift its attention to this weekend’s series at Tennessee.

Texas got the biggest swing of its evening in the bottom of the eighth inning. With the bases loaded and one out, UT designated hitter Carson Tinney crushed a baseball to left field. That 483-foot grand slam – the furthest-traveling of UT’s 74 homers this season – put the Longhorns ahead.

Tinney’s homer came at the expense of UTSA reliever Connor Kelley, who had just entered the game and loaded the bases by walking Aiden Robbins. One of UTSA’s top pitchers, Kelley had not given up a home run since Feb. 27. Kelley had pitched 39 ⅓ innings of homer-less baseball over his last 12 appearances.

Texas had a chance to respond to UTSA taking the lead, but Sam Simmons’ strikeout of Ashton Larson stranded runners on second and third base. Oddly enough, Larson was replaced defensively after the strikeout by Anthony Pack Jr. between the seventh and eighth inning. Pack is among UT’s best hitters, but he was left out of today’s starting lineup as Texas attempted to give him some rest.

UTSA is back on top. With two outs in the seventh inning, UTSA cleanup hitter Andrew Stucky was hit by a Brody Walls pitch. Stucky then rumbled around the balls on Diego Diaz’s fourth hit of the night, which was a double.

After UTSA and Texas combined for 14 runs over tonight’s first three innings, the offenses have cooled off at UFCU Disch-Falk Field. Neither team has scored since the third inning, and Texas has been held hitless over the last three frames by UTSA relievers Kendall Dove and Mike DeBattista.

UTSA had a chance to retake the lead during the fifth frame, but UT reliever Brody Walls got Jordan Ballin to ground into an inning-ending double play. The 28th double play of UT’s season got the Longhorns out of a bases-loaded jam.

UTSA’s lead was short-lived. Texas scored three runs in the bottom of the third inning as the Longhorns took advantage of a Roadrunner error and freshman outfielder Maddox Monsour’s first career homer. Monsour’s two-run blast came with two outs.

You know that four-run lead that Texas had? It no longer exists. UTSA scored six times in the third inning to seize control of the scoreboard. The biggest of the Roadrunners’ five hits belonged to pinch-hitter Garrett Gruell, who hit a three-run homer on the first pitch he saw from Texas reliever Ethan Walker.

In addition to its five hits, UTSA was also aided in the inning by an untimely error by Texas second baseman Ethan Mendoza. Texas starter Max Grubbs was also pulled from the game during the inning.

A big swing from UTSA’s Diego Diaz has gotten the Roadrunners on the scoreboard. With one out in the second inning, Diaz crushed a no-doubt shot over the fence in right field for his fifth homer of the season.

Texas jumped on the Roadrunners in the first inning. The Longhorns got their first four runners aboard in the frame, which eventually featured three hits and two walks. Texas plated runs on Ethan Mendoza’s bases-loaded walk, Ashton Larson’s sacrifice fly and Casey Borba’s two run single.

UTSA starting pitcher James Hubbard faced just five batters before he was replaced with one out in the inning. Reliever Blayne Lyne, who originally signed with Texas A&M while Jim Schlossnagle was coaching the Aggies, eventually got the Roadrunners back to their dugout.
