Move over, H-E-B. The San Antonio-based grocer might be king of the Lone Star State, but a national rival is taking the crown as the inaugural grocery store in a buzzy Texas town.
The rapidly growing city of Jarrell, an Austin suburb located about 42 miles north of the Capital City, is officially gearing up for its debut grocery store within city limits. Back in October 2025, Jarrell City Council approved a land annexation to host the future property, with Walmart slated as the anchor retailer.
Now, new project documents are being set into motion. Walmart on Friday, May 1, submitted plans for not just a store but also an adjacent fuel station in relation to the project, according to project filings with the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR).
Walmart’s future Central Texas storefront will encompass nearly 175,000 square feet as part of its project scope. The estimated $12.2 million storefront is anticipated to kick-start construction in early September, ahead of a tentative August 2027 completion date, based on preliminary TDLR timelines.
Its supplementary fuel station will be located next door and is scheduled to run on a similar construction timeline. That portion of the project is flagged as having an approximately $2.3 million budget and just over 7,600 square feet of retail space.
While these project documents outline preliminary information, Walmart officials previously told Jarrell city leaders in fall 2025 that the store is expected to be a $70 million investment in town, scaling up to employ more than 300 personnel upon completion.
