Caution urged as rabies-positive bat found in Tornillo

EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — El Paso County Animal Welfare confirms a rabies-positive bad in Tornillo, Texas.

There is no sign of widespread risk to the public, according to a statement posted to Facebook from the City of Socorro.

Rabies exists in local wildlife and staying cautious helps protect you, your family, and your pets, officials warn.

Stay safe with these steps:

Keep your pets’ rabies vaccinations up to date (every year)

Avoid contact with wildlife, especially bats

Report animals acting unusually or aggressively

Never handle dead animals; report them instead

If you see a dead or injured animal, or notice concerning behavior, call El Paso County Animal Welfare or Socorro Animal Control Department.
