Here’s what to expect across the state late this week and into the weekend:
Severe thunderstorms aren’t out of the question for Houstonians this weekend, with locally heavy rainfall as the primary concern.
“Friday continues to look active with scattered to numerous shower and thunderstorm activity,” the NWS Houston-Galveston Office wrote in its outlook. “The risk of locally heavy showers and thunderstorms is increasing during the Friday-Saturday time frame.”
As of Wednesday, the chance of precipitation Saturday in Houston is about 70 percent. Temperatures could hit a high of 82, dropping to a low of 72 at night.
Texans in the north should expect mostly cloudy skies as a finish to the week, with the chance for storms to sweep back in this weekend.
“Expect showers and storms to return late Friday into Saturday as lift and moisture interact with the unstable environment,” forecasters with the NWS Dallas-Fort Worth Office wrote in their outlook. “Any storm that develops will be elevated in nature, posing a threat for hail.”
The timing and coverage of severe weather is uncertain as of Wednesday evening, but “unsettled weather’ is predicted to continue through the upcoming weekend.
Cooler temperatures are returning to Central Texas on Thursday. Forecasters with the NWS Austin-San Antonio Office anticipate a high of 74 during the day, dropping to lows near 64 at night.
A low to medium chance of thunderstorms is in the cards Thursday, persisting through the weekend.
“Chances for showers and thunderstorms have increased Friday into the weekend,” Austin forecasters wrote. “Some of these storms may be capable of producing heavy rainfall though it’s still a bit too early to talk about the amounts.”
A cold front brings the potential for a hard freeze in Amarillo Thursday morning, according to the region’s NWS Office. A frost advisory is in effect for the region through 9 a.m. on Thursday.
After the front passes, temperatures are expected to rebound into the 70s on Thursday, with the potential for near-record highs over the weekend.
Temperatures Friday could rise into the low 90s by the afternoon. Lows could drop back to around 53 degrees at night, according to the detailed forecast.
“The warm temperatures will continue on Saturday, but should be even warmer with more areas reaching the low 90s for (a) high,” forecasters wrote. “Another weak front should move over the region on Saturday night into Sunday morning, which will lead to highs on Sunday being the coolest of the long term forecast.”
