Nervous Charlie’s first opened in Austin off North Lamar Boulevard back in 2018, building a variety of bagel sandwiches and flavor combinations from ingredients shipped from New York City as well as the Tri-State area in the northeast. After expanding beyond Austin to its neighboring suburb of Cedar Park, Nervous Charlie’s is tapping back into its capital city roots — this time, south of Lady Bird Lake.
Nervous Charlie’s will open its third bagel shop at 2159 S. Lamar Boulevard, as confirmed by both online and on-site signage. The upcoming eatery is on the property that previously housed Patika, a popular South Austin cafe with a Danish twist.
In a properly Austin-esque, weird fashion, the bagel shop unveiled its expansion plans last week via a Jurassic Park social media spoof, complete with a blonde wig befitting of 1990s-era Laura Dern.
“This species of bagel has been extinct on South Lamar since before Rainey Street was cool,” Nervous Charlie’s team panned in the video. “You did it, you crazy son of a b***h, you did it.”
Specifics on the new bagel shop’s timeline are limited, with owners saying the business is “coming soon” to the bustling South Austin corridor. Nervous Charlie’s will be in good Austin company in the neighborhood, with fellow local favorites Uncle Nicky’s Italian Specialties, Loro Asian Smokehouse & Bar and Bird Bird Biscuit all along the same block.
