Drivers planning a shopping trip this weekend on the Far Northeast Side may want to brace for major delays. As part of a major upgrade to I-35 in San Antonio, a state agency is shutting down both directions of the interstate for more than 24 hours.
The Texas Department of Transportation is doing some heavy bridge work across the Alamo City. In the latest, crews are tackling the bridge near The Forum shopping center in the Schertz-Live Oak-Selma area, kicking off at 8 p.m. Friday, May 8.
“NB/SB I-35 closed from Olympia Parkway to Evans Rd. for bridge construction from 8 p.m. Friday, May 8, until 7 a.m., Saturday, May 9,” the state agency warns. “Traffic will be detoured to the frontage roads. Plan ahead for expected delays.”
This closure will likely have major implications for weekend drivers hoping to hit the booming shopping center that straddles the Live Oak and Selma city limits. But it may also signal a significant snag for those heading of the city toward New Braunfels, San Marcos or Austin for the weekend.
Drivers will be forced off the highway in both directions, using the access road to bypass the construction. This will add traffic lights and intersections to journeys along the highway. With a bump in the number of travelers over the weekend, anyone traversing the Far Northeast Side should brace for delays or try to plan an alternate route.
