Two trailers were stolen from Austin’s First Independent Baptist Church, according to local law enforcement agencies.
AUSTIN, Texas — The pastor of Austin’s First Independent Baptist Church is not holding any grudges, after two thieves were captured on camera stealing the church’s food trailer.Â
Pastor Mike Marcellus founded the church roughly 40 years ago and partners with the ministry, Century Charities, to provide services to the community. A property less than a mile down the road, along with a food trailer, was given to the church to help with that need.
On Oct. 9, however, two men were seen on security cameras breaking in through the gate and taking off with the trailer in broad daylight. The Austin Police Department (APD) said the trailer is worth roughly $22,000, adding that two storage containers and a generator were also stolen.
Marcellus suspects duo was watching them before they made their move.
“I think they probably were surveying everything and decided that this would be a good time,” said Marcellus.Â
The church used the trailer for events and to distribute food to the community. It was recently sent for maintenance and they recently got it back.
To add insult to injury, the Travis County Sheriff’s Office confirmed to KVUE on Thursday that they were investigating another theft involving a second trailer stolen on church property on Oct. 17.
Marcellus said, unfortunately, thefts at the church are not uncommon.Â
“We realize that when these people come in and take, they’re not just taking from us – they’re taking from the community,” said Marcellus.Â
The church is set to host its Fall Festival this weekend. It was originally set for Halloween, but was moved to Nov. 1, and without the trailer, they won’t be able to give out food.Â
“For 40 years we’ve had to deal with this, and it wasn’t easy at first, but I’ve learned I’m not going to stop doing this; We’re going to help people, people will help us,” said Marcellus. “We will distribute to the needy.”
KVUE reached out to Century Charities. A member said they were working on providing a response.
