The National Weather Service in Houston warned in its latest forecast discussion Friday afternoon that “wet weather will continue into Mother’s Day weekend with a risk of flash flooding and some strong to severe storms.”
Forecasters say Southeast Texas could see multiple rounds of showers and thunderstorms through Sunday, with heavy rain, damaging winds and hail all possible at times.
Saturday may not be a complete washout, but the bigger concern is repeated rainfall in some areas.
“Heavy rainfall also remains a concern as well,” the NWS wrote. “Some spots with stronger storms could see totals near 1-3 inches, with isolated higher totals upwards of around 4-5 inches possible.”
Meteorologists say one of the biggest forecast challenges is timing. Some neighborhoods could catch breaks between storms while others see repeated downpours throughout the weekend, especially closer to the coast and parts of East Texas.
There is at least some good news for Mother’s Day itself.
The NWS says it expects “a lull in rains some time around Saturday night into portions of Sunday” before another cold front moves through Sunday night into early Monday. After that, forecasters expect “high pressure and calmer weather throughout much of the upcoming work week.”
