The Corpus Christi Police Department has identified a woman found dead at Padre Island National Seashore as someone who had been reported missing days earlier, about a week after she disappeared.

Angelita Martinez, 40, was reported missing by family members after she was last seen Friday evening, May 1, walking near Windward Drive on Padre Island, according to police. Authorities had previously asked the public for help locating Martinez, who was last seen wearing a gray top and dark-colored sweatpants while carrying a Nike galaxy backpack.

In an update released Friday, the Corpus Christi Police Department said Martinez was found dead Wednesday, May 6, at Padre Island National Seashore in Kleberg County and later confirmed to be the missing woman.

The Texas Rangers are actively investigating the death, while the Corpus Christi Police Department is assisting. Officials have not shared additional details about the circumstances surrounding Martinez’s death or how she was found.

Martinez’s daughter told KRIS 6 News that her mother was from Austin and that no foul play is suspected in her death at this time.

Authorities have not shared whether additional information about the investigation will be released. Anyone with information regarding her death is asked to contact the Corpus Christi Police Department at 361-886-2600.
